Welcome to Oak Class. We are the Year 6 Class at Chesterton Primary School.
Mrs Chapman teaches Oak Class, with support from Miss Clilverd, Mrs Hooper and Mrs Wykes.
The learning in Year 6 is organised in a range of ways and includes whole-class, group and independent activities. All lessons vary but a typical session may include a whole-class input interspersed with some peer discussion and developed with some focused learning tasks which are typically differentiated to 4 levels of challenge. The children choose the level of challenge they work at, although the teacher provides guidance, and then they are supported to work independently to establish not just their fluency but also their ability to apply that learning to context.
The majority of our learning stems from investigating BIG questions which we discuss at the start of a new unit of work as a whole-class and which we then work towards answering by developing our store of key knowledge and applying it to a specific situation. These BIG questions are linked to our choice of texts in both English and Guided Reading in order to enhance and deepen the children’s understanding of the key issues under examination.
Each half term, we also focus on one of our school’s core values: Respect, Persevere and Care. This learning will be linked through the delivery of our foundation subjects and where possible to core learning tasks in order to establish a positive mind-set and develop essential life-long learning skills and values.
